M2PK is a sensitive screening test for colon and rectal cancer, used prior to confirmation by colonoscopy. Colorectal cancer is one of the most common malignancies, accounting for about 11% of all deaths from cancer.
It is recommended that everyone over the age of 50, without pre-existing risk factors, be screened for colon cancer.
The concentration of M2PK in the faeces correlates with the severity of colorectal cancer. It has a sensitivity of 81% and a specificity of 80%.
